3 Largest Apple Varieties: For Those Who Like It Big
Every gardener strives for a bountiful apple harvest. There are several varieties that are distinguished not only by their high yield but also by their large fruit size. These are true giants, and they're also delicious and aromatic.
Renet Pizguda
One of the oldest varieties, bred by the Ukrainian breeder L.P. SimirenkoThe fruits of 'Renet Pizguda' weigh 500–700 g. This variety is considered a dessert variety, but its drawback is self-sterility. For the trees to produce fruit, they need to be pollinated, for example, with Korea or Kuban Spur. The advantages of this variety include:
- high productivity;
- drought resistance;
- early fruiting;
- excellent taste of fruits;
- long-term storage.
This variety is most often cultivated in the Stavropol and Krasnodar regions, as well as other southern regions with mild climates. The fruits of 'Renet Pizguda' are slightly ribbed, sometimes with warty growths on their surface. The color is golden yellow with a subtle blush and spots.
Bellefleur the Chinese

A late-season apple variety bred by I.V. Michurin in 1908. The first harvest was collected six years later. The fruit is excellent quality, slightly flattened, and weighs 200–300 g on average. Some particularly large specimens weighing up to 500 g are also available.
The fruits are light green, becoming lighter as they ripen. A blush gives them a presentable appearance. The fruit is pinkish-red in color, with fine-grained, snow-white flesh. The taste is sweet and sour with spicy notes. Apples of this variety can easily be called dessert apples.
The trees reach 6–10 m in height and begin bearing fruit in the 8th–9th year. The fruits ripen towards the end of summer and have a shelf life of 2 months. refrigerator Apples can last until New Year's. Mature trees produce 50–70 kg of fruit annually, which are consumed primarily fresh; they are also well-suited for making fruit salads, jams, and compotes.
Jumbo Pomme
The top-ranked variety in our ranking is "Jumbo Pomme," a variety developed by French breeders. Its advantage lies not only in its large fruit but also in its ease of cultivation. The main thing to remember is that the trees require pruning. They are quite vigorous, with a robust crown. The branches are covered with rounded, angular fruits of a burgundy-red hue. Each fruit weighs approximately 360–400 g, with some specimens weighing up to 1 kg.
The flesh of these apples is fragrant and very sweet, becoming loose as the fruit ripens.
The first harvest should be expected 3-4 years after planting. The trees bear fruit annually. The harvest ripens from September to October and is suitable for storage. If you keep the apples cool, you can enjoy them even in the spring.
Not all gardeners have heard of the varieties listed, but if you want to grow apple giants, they are worth paying attention to.
