Why is quicklime sprinkled around an apple tree in the spring?

When planting an apple tree, the soil in which it will grow is of great importance. This fruit tree requires neutral soil. Excessively acidic or alkaline soil negatively impacts its development. Soil acidification can and should be combated. One method for this is quicklime.

Positive properties of quicklime

In addition to soil deoxidation, this substance has a number of other good qualities:

  • increases the amount of useful micro- and macroelements;
  • increases soil looseness, which helps retain moisture close to the surface;
  • promotes the development of soil microflora;
  • helps strengthen the immunity of plants due to the presence of calcium in its composition;
  • actively fights weeds;
  • neutralizes the effects of toxic metals.

Determination of soil acidity

You can determine soil acidity using a specialized device, but not every gardener has one. There are some signs you can use to determine the acidity of your soil yourself:

  • dandelions, horsetail, plantain, and woodlice grow on the site;
  • the ground becomes covered with a greyish coating.

You can determine if your soil is acidic using litmus paper or vinegar. If there's no reaction when you mix vinegar with the soil, the soil is acidic.

Timing and rules for adding lime to the soil

Slaked lime (fluff) is harsh on plant roots. It should be applied in the fall. Unlike slaked lime, quicklime is applied to apple trees in the spring, as it doesn't burn the roots.

Liming is carried out once every 5 years. If signs of acidification are present, the process can be repeated after 3 years.

Before applying the fertilizer, dig a trench 6 to 20 cm deep around the apple tree, add lime, and cover with soil. The dosage depends on the soil composition and density. The higher the dosage, the deeper the fertilizer should be buried.

In areas where fruit trees are located, acidic soils are successfully treated with quicklime. It increases soil fertility, improves its structure, and enriches the soil with beneficial micro- and macronutrients. Applying lime to apple trees in the spring will prevent weeds from spreading. These conditions are favorable for the development and production of a good harvest.
